Former RBI governor Bimal Jalan traces India’s economic history in a new book

  • New Delhi: Former RBI governor Bimal Jalan’s new book ‘The India Story’ focuses on India’s economic history and aims to provide lessons for the future of India’s political economy.
  • Published by Rupa, the book will be released on 21 July on ‘SoftCover’, ThePrint’s online venue to launch select non-fiction books.
  • Referencing the post-2014 political moment and BJP-led majority government, Jalan introduces the concept of putting in place long-standing political and economic reforms nationwide.
  • With that in mind, he traces India’s economic policies from 1991 to 2019 to offer insights on learning from the past, before moving ‘Beyond the Metrics of Economy’ to talk about the role of governance in implementing these policies.
  • A former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Member of Parliament from 2003 to 2009, Bimal Jalan has held several government positions throughout his career, such as finance secretary and chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to Prime Minister.
  • Jalan also served as India’s representative on the boards of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank from 2014 to 2016.
  • He has previously written three books on various aspects of India’s economic and political history, namely ‘India Then and Now’ (2020), ‘India Ahead’ (2018) and ‘Politics Trumps Economics’ (2012), the latter co-authored with economist Pulapre Balakrishnan.
