Lovlina Borgohain wins India’s third medal at the Games

  • Tokyo: India’s Lovlina Borgohain lost to reigning world champion Busenaz Surmeneli by unanimous decision in the women’s welterweight (64-69kg) semifinal at Tokyo Olympics 2020 on Wednesday.
  • Before going down, Lovlina put up a spirited show in the semis bout to script history by clinching a bronze medal.
  • With this, India’s boxing campaign came to an end in Tokyo 2020. She became only the third Indian boxer to win a medal at the Olympics.
  • Lovlina followed the footsteps of veteran boxer Vijender Singh (2008 Beijing Olympics) and legendary Mary Kom (2012 London Olympics). This is India’s third medal of the ongoing Tokyo Olympics.
  • Aiming to script history by becoming the first-ever boxer from India to enter an Olympic final, the 23-year-old pugilist was no match in front of the top seed Surmeneli of the welterweight division. Lovlina lost all three rounds with a unanimous decision from the five judges going in favour of the Turkish boxer.
  • Up against quite literally a bully in the ring, Borgohain was completely out-punched by the gold medal favourite, who produced a thoroughly dominating performance. The Assam boxer also coped a one-point deduction in the second round for not paying attention to the referee’s instructions despite a couple of cautions.
