Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi appointed as Deputy Leader of House in Rajya Sabha

  • Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has been appointed as the deputy Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha.
  • The development comes days after Piyush Goyal vacated the spot as he was appointed as the Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha, replacing former Union minister Thaawarchand Gehlot.
  • Union ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Bhupender Yadav were also believed to be in the race for the post.
  • Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi is one of the few leaders in BJP who is believed to have a good working relationship with other political parties. Naqvi had served as the minister of state for parliamentary affairs during the first term of the Modi government. In 2017, he was handed over the charge of the Ministry of Minority Affairs.
  • Last week, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, along with Union ministers Dharmendra Pradhan, Bhupender Yadav and others, took part in a meeting with senior BJP leaders, including JP Nadda, Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh, to discuss matters related to the Monsoon session of Parliament.
  • The meeting lasted for more than an hour at the residence of Rajnath Singh, who also chairs the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs and is deputy leader of BJP in Lok Sabha.
